Does Gender Matter in Palworld Breeding?
Gender matters in Palworld breeding, but less than most players think — and in exactly one case, more than they think. Here's the whole story: when gender is just a requirement, and the single combo where it actually changes what you get.
Every breed needs one male and one female
A Breeding Farm only produces an egg when it holds one male and one female Pal. Two of the same gender won't breed, even if the combination is otherwise valid. If your farm isn't producing, checking the parents' genders is one of the first things to rule out.
For normal combos, gender doesn't change the child
Here's the part that trips people up: for almost every combination, it doesn't matter which parent is male and which is female. The child's species is decided by the two species involved, not by which one carries which gender. So if the breeding calculator says Pal A + Pal B makes Pal C, you get Pal C whether A is the male or the female.
The one exception: Katress & Wixen
There is exactly one gender-dependentpairing in Palworld 1.0, and it's worth memorizing:
- Katress ♀ + Wixen ♂ → Katress Ignis
- Katress ♂ + Wixen ♀ → Wixen Noct
Same two species, but reversing which one is male flips the result between two different variants. If you specifically want Katress Ignis or Wixen Noct, you have to get the genders the right way round. The calculator flags this combo automatically so you don't have to remember it under pressure.
Why gender still matters for planning
Even though gender rarely changes the species, it shapes your breeding line in practice:
- You need a compatible male/female pair at every step of a breeding chain, not just the last one.
- When breeding for passive skills, you often keep a hatchling specifically because it has a useful gender for the next pairing.
Bottom line: line up a male and a female, ignore gender for the species result, and only sweat it for the Katress/Wixen pair. Check any combo in the breeding calculator — it marks the one that cares about gender.
